the deep dive

1. “From the buildings in which we live and work, to the cars we drive, or the knives and forks with which we eat, everything we use was designed to create some sort of marriage between _form________________ and ___function______________.”

2. The folks at IDEO state that they are not experts in any given area. But, they do claim to be experts on the __process of how you desighn stuff__________________, which they apply to the innovation of consumer products.

3. After the team of designers is brought together, told the problem, and informed they have five days to “pull it off,” what phase of the design process do they immediately engage in?
they start by brainstorming

4. Give two examples of what the team members did during this phase.

a.  defined specific problems

b.  found ways to adress these problems

5. List five rules-of-thumb that IDEO employees follow when they share ideas during the brainstorming phase:

a. one convorsation at a time

b. encourage wild ideas

c. defer judgement

d. build on the ideas of others

e. stay focused

6. Why should wild (and sometimes crazy) ideas be entertained during the brainstorming phase?
to be sure that some of the ideas are new and not already used. the wilder the idea the more originol it is likeley to be

7. After the brainstorming phase was over, the team narrowed down the hundreds of ideas by _voting____________ for those ideas that were not only “cool” but also __buildable_______________ in a short period of time. What phase of the design process is this called?
explore possibilities

8. IDEO believes that the ideas and efforts of a _team_____________ will always be more successful than the planning of a lone genius.

9. Once the ideas were narrowed down and divided into categories, the group was split into four smaller teams. What phase(s) of the design process was each of these groups responsible for?
 model or prototypes

10. The leaders at IDEO believe that ___playful_____________ behavior and a comfortable______________ environment are two important reasons why their employees are able to think quickly and creatively to produce innovative results.

11. Sometimes, people come up with great solutions that work by trying their ideas first, and asking for _forgiveness________________ later.

12. Design is often a process of going too far and having to take a few steps back. What phase of the design process would the critique of the four mock-ups come under?
refine

13. Upon critique of the four teams’ models, it was obvious that none of the teams had developed an optimum solution. However, the people at IDEO believe that it is important to __fail___________ often in order to ___succeed__________ sooner.

14. What percentage of the entire week’s time did it take to fabricate the final prototype?
20%

15. Instead of showering his design team with a tremendous amount of praise, what did the boss require his employees to do with their new design?
to take it out and let the public test it out

16. Of all the things that we are surrounded by every day, what has not been placed through the design process?
nature

Conclusion

1. What did you find to be the most impressive part of the team’s effort?
i found it most impressive that the team was able to desighn the shopping cart and fabricate it within 5 days.

2. What advantages are there to having a design team with members that have non-engineering backgrounds?
some advantages of having members on the team that dont have an engineering background is that there point of view is not as proffesional so they will know if public will want to use the product better.

3. There was a point in the process where a self-appointed group of adults stepped up, stopped the ideas, and redirected the group to break up into teams. Why was this done?

4. At the end of the video, Dave Kelly states, “Look around. The only things that are not designed are the things we find in nature.” Can you think of anything that would contradict this statement?

egg drop challenge- literation #1

Total # of achievments earned: 13

  • Our materials fit inside a printer box.
  • Our materials fit inside a shoe box.
  • Weighed less than 500 grams.
  • Weighed less than 300 grams.
  • Weighed less than 200 grams.
  • Weighed less than 150 grams.
  • Weighed less than 100 grams.
  • Weighed less than 50 grams.
  • We hit the butcher paper.
  • We hit the 3rd ring
  • our egg didnt break (x3)
some desighns that worked well were when they suspended the egg inside of a box so id didnt hit anything when the box impacted. but this desighn was very heavy. i wouldnt change anything about our desighn because our desighn was very light and our egg did not break so it worked cery well.

glider challenge: deliverables

1. Our challenge was to create a glider that could go fast and far.
2. The constraints were that we were limited to 6 pieces of balsa wood and one piece of tissue paper.  we had to use these materials to build a glider.
3. We were not able to test the glider because we built it on the same day that we had to "compete" with them. although we couldnt test it it did fly very well.
4. Considering our gliders physical appearance the glider we madew performed very well in the distance and hang time portions of the test.  If i could change anything about the flight i would change the fact that we did not build the glider sooner on in the week so we didnt have to wait until the last second to build it.

Ted pt. 1- ideas worth spreading?

1. The ted organization is about bringing together people from engineering, desighn, and technology to a confrence.
2. The purpose of the TED website is to spread ideas worth spreading and this website helps them spread some of thier ideas beyond just the people incorporated with the organization.
3. The topics i think we should be most intrested in are technology because we are always looking to improve it and make it more efficiant and desighn because we like to make sure that any product we make not only functions well but alsoo has an attractive desighn.
4. The three videos i think we would be most intrested in are "the rise of personal robotics" because we work a lot with robotics, "Its time to redesighn medical data" because we are always looking for ways to improve things and make them easier to use, and " how i built a toaster from scratch" because we like to build things and learn how someone else would do it so we can try to improve in a certain area.
5. I chose "the rise of peronal robotics".
6. I could probably get involved in this field by taking endineering classes and when i am in college taking a robotics class.

reverse engineering: mechanichal product-functional analysis

1. The purpose of the wire cutters is to cut metal wires of varying sizes into smaller peices.
2. A) you put the wire between the teeth B) you sqeez the handles C) the wire is cut into two new peices
3.
4. The wire cutters have a locking mechanism and a spring to hold the handles open when it is not locked, also they have a bunch of hinges to make the teeth move when you sqeeze the handles.
5. Most of the desighn qaulities are easily seen but there is an o ring inside that is hidden from imidiate view.

reverse engeneering-functional analysis- essential qestions

1. The purpose of reverse engineering is to see how a product functions and what makes it work.
2. Visual qaulities are what make a product look good or bad and functional qaulities are what makes it work well or not well.

reverse engineering: mechanichal product- visual analysis

I did my project on a tool that was on my desk.
side
front

top

Product Anallysis-
Visual Anallysis: This product is very sleek and fits in your hand very well. Also its size and shape lets it fit in your pocket or a tool belt without hassle but since it is curved it wont slide out as easily, ensuring that it wont fall out when you are doing something. Finally it has a lock so that when you are not using it it wont open and cut you.
Functional anallysis- The purpose of this product is to cut small wires. it has small holes so that you can get and effective cut on whatever wire you are cutting. Also it has a spring thqat makes the tool spring open instead of staying shut so you dont have to go through more work to use it.

The target audience of the people making this product is probably construction workers or do it yourself men that like to work on thier houses. The target audience would consist of mostly men and not as many women so the desighn is manly with a small feminine touch.

opt in #2 part 2

The images in this picture are:
a jacket
shoes
gloves
the top of a pot
two roses
gogles
and a can of spray paint
I think these items can be used to form a peacful demonstration because they could paint a mural of flowers to signify peace and if anyonee tried to attack them they could use the top of the pot to shield themselves. The goggles and gloves show that they will paint something with the spraypaint and i assume they will paint the roses. Also because the jacket has a hood on it and they are wearing sneakers it shows that they will be doing something in the night that they dont want to be caught doing. I am not sure why the pot cover is there though.

graphic desig: whats going on in this design?

I was absent this day so i had no partner.
This is a picture of an article from a magazine called wired.
The article is advertising bluetooth heads.
1. Message content: This message is very helpful in choosing which headset you would like because it gives pros and cons and describes the headsets very well.
2. Size and Shape: The add covers one side of the page and is normal size. This makes the add fairly easy to follow.
3. Readability: Because the text is black and the backcolor is a yellowish brown it is very easy to read.
4. Needs the Audience: This add makes sure that if people want to buy the headset because it is good qaulity or it is very stylish it will keep the audience attracted and wanting to look into the product some more.
5:  Use of Proven Design Elemnts and Principles:
Design principles- proportion and scale: The add makes sure that both text and image get a fair share of the page. Also it puts the image as the first thing you see so it is sure to catch your eye and attract you first.
Design Elements- Color: Its color goes along well with the image and text and it does not give you a headache to look at it.

Conclusion:

1. Trends are what groups of people are wearing or doing. Graphic designers can use trends to choose what they should put on a product or add so the public sees that it matches thier trend and they will be drawn to it.

2. Human nature plays a role on how a product is marketed because people will look for things that intrest them and match thier trend because of human nature.

3. A potential audience is detirmined by making sure who the people you will try to market your product to are into what you are marketing and want to use it.

4.You must discover the kind of things your audience likes and is interested in. And also you must find out what their favorite things about those products are so that can give you an idea about creating your product.

opt in post: 1

I think facebook is helpingwith the protest in Egypt because people can use it to invite large groups of people to a rally or other event. Also it can be used to send mass messages to people instead of havint to make a phone call to each person they wanted to invite. It also may work against them because if they make a post the police forces may see it and stop the rallys before they ever even happen. Just like evrey other form of protest it has pro's and con's.

content is king

1. My favorite hobby is playing music.
2. Many diffrent bands use blogs to advertise thier music and merchendise. my favorit band that uses blogging is Blink-182.
3. I think i could see myself blogging in the future about what kind of music my band plays, how shows were, where upcoming shows are, how to get tickets, and about our merchendise.

survival at sea game

This activity was to number on a list of materials that you might find if you were on a ship and it had just sank from least to greatest importance.  although our group did not have much knowlege on the subject we managed to come pretty close to the official rankings by the coast gaurd.  Our biggest downfall was that we thought a star map and a regular map would be the two most important objects. After reading the coast gaurds report we found out that they were actually the least important because you need a lot more materials to actually use it.  The rum which we thought was the least important actually turned out to be very high up on the list also.  Other than those materials we were only off by one or two.  our group worked fairly well together but we did argue about a few things.  I think that official oppinion is better than experimantal because they had much more time to test what the objects could be used for than we did.

tennis ball team building game

The challenge of this team buildding exersise was to have each member of the team exchange the tennis ball without dropping it and see which team could do it the fastest.  Our team decided to make a slide with our hands and drop the ball down it so each member would exchange the ball without having to make a time wasting effort. Our plan worked so well we won the game. I do not think i would want to change our plan at all.

engeneering design project 2.4.1-design project

My partner for this project was Erik. We chose from the list of problems to desighn four types of candy and a candy dispencer.  We decided to do this problem because it seemed like the funnest one to do.  First we defined the problem which was to make a candy dispencer that would dispence four kind of candy easily.  Then we had to breainstorm desighns for candy and the dispencer it would come out of. The fourth step was making sure we had the right mesurements and sizes of candy for the problem we were facing.  Lastly we talked about if what we made was the ideal candy and dispencer and made sure no changes could be made. We only made one design so there was no need for a decision matrix. Since we made the inventor design on hiscomputer i could not upload o screenshot of out designs. We did not make a marketing brochure.

tennis ball activity

we were told to make a tennis ball touch each person in uour group's hand the fastest without dropping it.  our team decided to stand in a line and make a slide with our  hands.  this was very effective because we beat the other two teams with a time of 2.8 seconds.  i think i would keep our method the same because it worked efectivley.
